Comment: Black Milk has been catching great buzz recently. And for good reason. He’s the latest producer/emcee to showcase his diverse skills. Hailing from Detroit, his soulful approach has drawn the inevitable J Dilla comparisons, which quite frankly I find annoying. Let the late great Dilla be Dilla and let Black Milk be Black Milk. Regardless, Black Milk has a new 12” out on Fat Beats Records, his home label. Home of the Greats featuring One Be Lo (formerly One Man Army of Binary Star) is one of the bonus treats you can’t find on Black Milk’s most recent LP, “Popular Demand”. Black Milk laces the beat with a rolling piano lick, effectively pacing the rhythm of the track. As far as One Be Lo goes, I would have to say he is one of the few artists whose music I will blindly purchase. In general these days I am reluctant to buy anything sight unseen, sound unheard, but One Be Lo is consistently fresh. Truly encapsulating what it means to be an emcee (at least in my opinion), One Be Lo demonstrates delivery, flow, charisma, insight, metaphors, punch lines, creativity, and diversity. For further proof, check basically any track on Project F.E.T.U.S. (namely “Alphabet Soup” and “Double Essay”). Needless to say, “Home of the Greats” delivers a smoothed out beat and lyrics actually worth paying attention to. Dope headphone music. |
