Comment: Brand Nubian, meaning all four original members (Sadat X, Puba, Lord Jamar, and DJ Alamo) reunited for this joint which was featured on the soundtrack to Soul In the Hole. It was later featured on 1997’s shelved album, Time Is Running Out, which just recently saw the light of day. It’s funny. When Brand Nubian’s debut album, One For All, came out (1991), I thought hands down Grand Puba was my favorite of the three emcees. Then during the Foundation era (1999), I decided Sadat X was my new favorite. Over the past few weeks I’ve been bumping this album and revisiting others (Everything is Everything and In God We Trust) and have again reassessed. Lord Jamar may be my new number one. I don’t think he was every anyone’s number one. Damn Sadat X and his unique nasally flow and Puba and his crazy metaphors stealing the spotlight all these years. Anyhow, this Child Is Born joint is lovely. The production is a bit more mellow than what we’d grown accustomed to on One For All, but perhaps that just reflects the members’ maturation. Either way, all three emcees are at the top of their game and slay it. It’s fresh. It’s history. It’s the famous 5 %’s reunion. |
