Comment: This track is featured on the upcoming Jazzy Jeff album The Return of the Magnificent, the much anticipated Empire Strikes Back to Jeff’s highly touted 2001 release The Magnificent. Both albums are courtesy of BBE Records. BBE is an acronym for Barely Breaking Even, which is in spirit with the whole philosophy of the record label: Put out good quality music rather than sell our souls for a buck. So as a general rule of thumb, if it’s on BBE, it should be nice. Speaking of this track, Jeff delivers a stuttering, off-kilter beat replete with doubled up snare drums (which sound more like two quick handclaps). Not a ton of Jeff’s trademark technically proficient scratches, but definitely plenty of Jeff’s trademark soul. By the way, Jazzy Jeff was the first DJ to put the transformer scratch (that scratch that actually sounds like Optimus Prime or Megatron transforming from a Mack truck into a laser gun or boombox or jet plane). Well, either it was him or DJ Cash Money (of “Ugly Girls Be Quiet” fame). One of the invented it, the other put it to wax. Can’t remember which was which. But both from Philly and both dope. Little Brother provides the lyrics. A little more sing-songy, R&Bish then I would have expected. But not necessarily a bad thing. Slightly different than their usual 9th Wonder fare, but I’m digging it all the same. You be the judge. |

Comment: I heard LB sing a little on the Minstrel Show, but I didn't know they seriously had it. This is a hot track. I like the R&B vocals. They sound real smooth. The raps compliment the track well. As usual, Jazzy Jeff comes with a hot track. And the content is hot. I can't wait till I have my own crib so I can play this track for my lady. |
