Comment: I always feel like J Dilla never ceases to amaze me with the new ish he was able to create. Every time he’d drop a new production, I figured, “Okay, I guess this is the new type forward-thinking sound.” Yet every time, he managed to be so forward-thinking that he never stayed on a new sound for more than a minute. On this particular track, Dilla samples what appears to be some 70’s televison commercial and flips it into a 23rd century banger. For real, this beat is on some Nintendo Wii soundtrack tripping on mushrooms meets Sesame Street circa 1984 vibe. You can’t even describe it. And where I feel as though most vocalists would just throw in the towel and be like, “Nahhhh”, Kweli and Tip absolutely murder it. Kwelis is up first, breaking from his at times redundant flow to deliver an inspiringly fresh verse, while Tip plays the on-deck role and sounds as sharp as he ever was in vintage Tribe days. Words can’t do justice. Just click “listen”. Sometime that whole abstract, progressive sound just doesn’t bang. Without question, this does. I guarantee there are some alien cats vibing on the rings of Saturn as they rock to this right now. |
