Comment: I'm a huge PR & CL fan since “All Souled Out” in ‘91. I've supported everything these cats have done. When I heard “Shine on Me” I was diggin the whole element of Pete bringing that soul back to the game. Then to hear CL lyrics, and it was like old times. The song was not their best work, but it was a good chill joint for the heads to ride to. Then “Climax” came next and my thoughts were left puzzled.
I'm not saying you can't do party joints (check “Searching” and “Take You There”) but the track wasn't PR to me. Pete, if you’re reading you’re my favorite producer in the world son, but that track was average kid! CL came off lyrically on the joint, but the beat just didn't capture his unique flow. All in all, ya still my n*ggas, but please keep your SH*T hip-hop with that Pete & CL vibe.

Comment: Hip-hop is going through a bit of a rough period right now, and I suppose this is a bit better than your usual song. This is a bit of a "Love Movement" problem, isn't it? I remember asking somebody about that last Tribe album, because I was avoiding it like the plague, and the guy said "It's all Tribe Called Quest, though, so it's great." I listened, some of it was good MERELY because it was Tribe, but it wasn't them at their best. Same with this, man. You recognize Pete Rock and CL Smooth, but it's no “Mecca and the Soul Brother.” No way, man.

Comment: My take on "Climax" conflicts with that of "Shine On Me" in that I simply am not feeling this joint. This is not because I'm on some "Oh this doesn't live up to my Pete Rock and CL expectations" ish, nor because I think their recent change is bad, but simply because I don't find any element of this track to be exceptional. Production-wise, I find the beat to be redundant, and quite frankly, boring. East Indian inspired beats were cool the first few times I heard them, but if people aren't doing anything new with them, it's easy to lose interest. Also, I was never too hot about whiney girls singing hooks, sounding like they're on the brink of climax (so to speak). All in all, I won't say this track is necessarily bad per say, but definitely not great. Could it be because Pete and CL are simply having difficulty reaching the level at which they previously set the bar? Maybe. Check it out for yourself. |

Comment: I feel that C.L. Smooth has come with a harder edge than the last couple of albums. His voice is so clear on the mic, and I can hear a little hunger in his new style which is crazy. Pete Rock keeps it gully with his wide variety of beats. He is the king of production in my opinion. I'm glad for the reunion, but damn did it have to take 10 years?

Comment: This tune arrived just in time for spring. Not a classic necessarily, but decent. Diggin' the 70's funk/semi-dancehall feel. CL's delivery is more palatable than before, not so many forced inflections.

Comment: The intro was soundin’ good until the main beat dropped soft, very soft. But, at around 2:47, the beat switches up, and sh*t is dope from there forth. Could leave out the "uh huh's," and "whewww's" in the background.

Comment: Ohhhhhh…so the classic duo Pete Rock & CL finally release some new material, but it's not what the fans have been waiting for; it's candy floss and the production is not going anywhere. CL is in good form, but wasted on this here today-gone-tomorrow track. The only redeeming feature is the breakdown towards the end, but Pete Rock & CL are capable of so much better:

Comment: Actually, I think this is "Shine On Me". I like how Pete occasionally flips recognizable samples (think "Trouble Man" where he chops and rearranges "Joy"), plus the Mayfield sample is used well. However, the other guy singing at the end is unnecessary and annoying. CL is spitting his usual mixture of cream/lover man lyrics. This is far from the best thing the two have done. Maybe this was an unintentional leak; definitely not the best track to wet appetites for a reunion. |
