Name: d danja (Posted: 8/14/2004 7:17:00 AM) Summary: Wow! Comment: This joint really surprised me- Pete sorta mixed in the style of tracks he's known for and gave it an updated swagger- definitely effin' with this- damn shame that reunion isn't gonna happen after all. | Name: Rbrt (Posted: 11/14/2003 11:02:00 PM) Summary: Climax (they Going Hard)on This 1 Comment: Hater's fall back. "In God We Trust" I'm feeling this (listening to it while I type)."Pete Rock is like." like Peter Gunz said he is like my favorite rapper/producer on the DL. Especially the originality of this tune and at 2:49 it was over. Pete was on some "Take You There" sh*t. Yo CL, glad you got back at P. | Name: senorpizza (Posted: 6/26/2003 5:09:00 AM) Summary: Are There Any Good Singles On This Site? Comment: After subjecting my ears to Raekwon's mediocrity, Pete and C.L. come with some more average raps. Dude was right about 2:47 time-hack, but it's still average nonetheless.

I've supported everything these cats have done. When I heard “Shine on Me” I was diggin the whole element of Pete bringing that soul back to the game. Then to hear CL lyrics, and it was like old times. The song was not their best work, but it was a good chill joint for the heads to ride to. Then “Climax” came next and my thoughts were left puzzled. I'm not saying you can't do party joints (check “Searching” and “Take You There”) but the track wasn't PR to me. Pete, if you’re reading you’re my favorite producer in the world son, but that track was average kid! CL came off lyrically on the joint, but the beat just didn't capture his unique flow. All in all, ya still my n*ggas, but please keep your SH*T hip-hop with that Pete & CL vibe.
| Name: morty (Posted: 4/24/2003 9:02:00 PM) Summary: Only Thumbs Up Because... Comment: Hip-hop is going through a bit of a rough period right now, and I suppose this is a bit better than your usual song. This is a bit of a "Love Movement" problem, isn't it? I remember asking somebody about that last Tribe album, because I was avoiding it like the plague, and the guy said "It's all Tribe Called Quest, though, so it's great." I listened, some of it was good MERELY because it was Tribe, but it wasn't them at their best. Same with this, man. You recognize Pete Rock and CL Smooth, but it's no “Mecca and the Soul Brother.” No way, man.
| Name: Phayde (Posted: 4/22/2003 6:53:00 PM) Comment: My take on "Climax" conflicts with that of "Shine On Me" in that I simply am not feeling this joint. This is not because I'm on some "Oh this doesn't live up to my Pete Rock and CL expectations" ish, nor because I think their recent change is bad, but simply because I don't find any element of this track to be exceptional. Production-wise, I find the beat to be redundant, and quite frankly, boring. East Indian inspired beats were cool the first few times I heard them, but if people aren't doing anything new with them, it's easy to lose interest. Also, I was never too hot about whiney girls singing hooks, sounding like they're on the brink of climax (so to speak). All in all, I won't say this track is necessarily bad per say, but definitely not great. Could it be because Pete and CL are simply having difficulty reaching the level at which they previously set the bar? Maybe. Check it out for yourself. | Name: gdubb (Posted: 4/18/2003 4:12:00 PM) Summary: This Is 1 Hot Joint! Yes Cousin! Comment: I feel that C.L. Smooth has come with a harder edge than the last couple of albums. His voice is so clear on the mic, and I can hear a little hunger in his new style which is crazy. Pete Rock keeps it gully with his wide variety of beats. He is the king of production in my opinion. I'm glad for the reunion, but damn did it have to take 10 years?
| Name: brownstudy (Posted: 4/18/2003 9:41:00 AM) Summary: Feels Good. Comment: This tune arrived just in time for spring. Not a classic necessarily, but decent. Diggin' the 70's funk/semi-dancehall feel. CL's delivery is more palatable than before, not so many forced inflections.
| Name: squide (Posted: 4/17/2003 7:27:00 AM) Summary: Could've Been Great Comment: The intro was soundin’ good until the main beat dropped soft, very soft. But, at around 2:47, the beat switches up, and sh*t is dope from there forth. Could leave out the "uh huh's," and "whewww's" in the background.
| Name: JAZ:72 (Posted: 4/14/2003 11:54:00 PM) Summary: Why Pete..why...? Comment: Ohhhhhh…so the classic duo Pete Rock & CL finally release some new material, but it's not what the fans have been waiting for; it's candy floss and the production is not going anywhere. CL is in good form, but wasted on this here today-gone-tomorrow track. The only redeeming feature is the breakdown towards the end, but Pete Rock & CL are capable of so much better:
| Name: manatarms (Posted: 4/2/2003 10:57:00 AM) Summary: Disapointment Comment: Damn, I am a huge Pete Rock and CL fan but this one should have been burned with the studio it was made in... for defacing their whole career. | Name: outtrageous (Posted: 3/27/2003 12:37:00 PM) Summary: I'm Feelin' This Comment: I guess that since I'm a hardcore Pete Rock fan this is enough for me as a sample of what to look for on Soul Survivor 2. | Name: leejacobs (Posted: 3/25/2003 10:06:00 AM) Summary: A Qualified Thumbs Up Comment: Actually, I think this is "Shine On Me". I like how Pete occasionally flips recognizable samples (think "Trouble Man" where he chops and rearranges "Joy"), plus the Mayfield sample is used well. However, the other guy singing at the end is unnecessary and annoying. CL is spitting his usual mixture of cream/lover man lyrics. This is far from the best thing the two have done. Maybe this was an unintentional leak; definitely not the best track to wet appetites for a reunion. | Name: TrueHipHop (Posted: 3/24/2003 4:59:00 PM) Summary: Dope! Comment: The production is dope as f*ck, not every beat has to bang. | Name: dunson (Posted: 3/24/2003 1:15:00 PM) Summary: They Don't Make 'em Like This Anymore Comment: Classic Pete. Classic C.L. If you were a fan 10 years ago, there's nothing more you can ask for. Just listen. | Name: pep-c (Posted: 3/21/2003 10:31:00 PM) Summary: What Happened Comment: This is Pete at his worst. This is the man responsible for some of the hottest production of all time when it comes to classic hip-hop. Pete if you are reading this remember the Main Ingredient… |
