    Summary

While Blaq Poet has chosen to remain out of the spotlight over the course of his long and storied career, there is no disputing his place in the NYC street-hop pantheon.

Blaq Poet was first heard at the age of 17, when he released a blistering diss track, "Beat You Down," aimed at KRS-One in 1987 at the height of the "Bridge Wars" (they ended their feud a few years ago by appearing on a track together "Victory") and would later go on to head the group PhD who released their debut effort, Without Warning, (which contained very-early guest raps by Queensbridge notables Havoc of Mobb Deep and Cormega) in 1991 on Tuff City Records. After a series of 12 inch releases and an EP the group disbanded and in 1996 Blaq Poet joined forces with fellow Queensbridge emcees KL, Hostyle and Kyron to create the legendary underground group Screwball, which was quickly signed to Tommy Boy Records.

Screwball always endured a very tumultuous relationship with Tommy Boy since their content matter became a source of contention for the label, as both of the group's singles, "Who Shot Rudy," (aimed at then NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani) and "F.A.Y.B.A.N." (which is still regarded as one of the most clever Hip-Hop acronyms) created a huge firestorm leading up to the release Tommy Boy Records debut, Y2K, in 2000. Controversy aside, Y2K made an immediate impact on the Queensbridge scene, as the group's unabashed detailing of NYC's grimy underbelly was backed by legendary producers such as Marley Marl, DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Biz Markie, and included appearances from fellow Queensbridge artists Mobb Deep, MC Shan, Cormega, Nature, Capone and Big Noyd.

Screwball severed ties with Tommy Boy and released their sophomore effort, Loyalty, on Landspeed Records in 2001 - an effort that included production from Ayatollah and The Beatnuts and appearances from M.O.P., Kool G. Rap, Noreaga, Cormega, Nature and Tragedy Khadafi; and was paced by the grim single "Torture" and the furious title track

After the group endured the passing of KL due to an asthma attack in 2008, Screwball disbanded and Blaq Poet went solo and signed a deal with DJ Premier's Year Round Records label where he released Tha Blaqprint in 2009 on which all but two of the LP's 15-tracks were produced by DJ Premier.

While still very much affiliated with DJ Premier's Year Round Label (Poet appeared on two-tracks from Premier's 2010 LP DJ Premier Presents: Year Round Records- Get Used To Us) Blaq Poet has aligned himself with Brick Records for the release of his forthcoming solo-LP, Blaq Poet Society, which will be released on 6-21-2011. Blaq Poet Society is a meeting of the minds of Blaq Poet and producers Stu Bangas (Reef the Lost Cauze, Termanology, Heltah Skeltah, Vinnie Paz, Apathy, Sha Stimuli, Chino XL) and Vanderslice (Stat Quo, Apathy, Roc Marciano, Termanology, Cashis) that, after a brief exchange, was three-years in the making. As Stu Bangas clarifies- "I was in contact with an associate of Blaq's for a few years, we reconnected again in late 2008 and I asked him to get in touch with Poet for a mixtape I was working on. He talked to Poet, relayed I was interested in working with him and vouched for me and I ended up going to Long Island too shoot a video for a joint Poet hopped on that I produced in 2009. When I got back to Boston, I decided I wanted to work on an album with him and we decided to move forward with it. I reached out to my partner Vanderslice and he was excited to contribute production as well. The type of beats Vanderslice and I excel at are big sounding, gangster shit, the type of sound Poet excels over.

Now two- years later here we are with Blaq Poet Society, the result of our efforts."

Comment: This is not hot, it's wack from A to Z. If you want something hot listen to Poet's previous album, produced by Preemo or choose something like Apollo Brown for example. 4.3 stars for this shit? Come on, this alum is a joke... p.s. I have a Ford, my man :)

Comment: I agree that mad shit is starting to sound similar and its bland. Its 2011 and everyone needs to step it up to stand out to me. I didn't say that all the beats on this record sound the same. I said being that the same 2 cats made the beats they are most likely going to have a same style/ring to them. That's not in a negative way. Like I said, I think they are dope and I meant they all bang in the same manner. Stu's shit is dope and I think he deserves a bit of love, that's all.

Comment: That's not right about the beats sounding the same. "Two producers made the album so it should like that." Yea, the album should sound cohesive, but not have almost the same sample and sound in n 85 percent of the beats. Look at DJ Premier, you can always tell it's his beat, but it doesn't mean they sound the same..I believe it takes a huge amount of talent to be able to craft your own sound. Most people can't do it, as we can see there are only a handful of producers with their own sound that can be recognized. By the way, I agree with that Romanian dumbass on one thing; That most producers nowadays don't have the talent that producers in the 90's had. I think production is killin hip hop. Commercial, mainstream, and underground. A lot of shit is unoriginal and sounds the same. Startin to piss me off..

Comment: "The most ugliest women I saw was in America." then dude says "I speak English better than you." haha Sounds like your really wet about this album Klaus, 3 posts to diss it? Poet would probably slap you if you met in person so save your bullshit and just don't buy the album if you don't like it. The one dude that commented a few below had a good point, usually an album having multiple producers involved helps bring that different flavor from track to track. Being that the same 2 cats did the beats, they are most likely going to have the same style/ring to them. I bought this and I was quite pleased with it. The bass and lows hit very nice and everything was on point in my opinion.

Comment: I won't rate 1 star this product anymore. 3 times is enough. As for the mom thing in the US blowing off anyone for 20 bucks. Is that the best answer you can hit me with? You're more than stupid. You're the definition of stupidity :) More than that, how can you be that proud being illiterate at the same time? I guess is hard to admit that guys outside US are better at English than guys like you. As for the faggot thing, here in Europe we still prefer to hit the pussy instead of being leaded by faggots, of course the political correctness comes first. At the same time I understand why you prefer the ass instead of pussy. The most ugliest women I saw was in America and believe me, I have visited a lot of countries. This is the last post on this page. Peace, out...

Comment: You didn't hear the whole thing yet "but is def worth more than one effing star" :)) How can you say somethin' about this album when you haven't heard the whole thing yet? p.s. Hip hop has become what it is today thanks to groups like PE, NWA, WU TANG, BRNAD NUBIAN, GANGSTARR and producers like DIAMOND D, PREEM, RZA, PETE ROCK, etc. If you compare their creativity with the current productions I do believe that most of the producers should excuse themselves for their lack of originality and retire from the rap game...

Well, we in Romania, my crew for example, we were P.E. fans, NWA, Big Daddy Kane and so on. And I'm talkin' here about 1990. Weere you born those days? And another thing, I saw Blaq Poet's concert last year in Bucharest together with Preemo, that was the real shit, excellent show. This album... ha, ha, ha... this ain't shit. Call my name again and I will send you 10 bucks to spend on a real good rap album! :)

Comment: Cover to Cover Banger. If the neighbors start bangin on my wall it is real heavy work production wise. Poet is always sharp but really shines on Hood Talk and Power Music. Highlights off the features for me was Lateb, Reef, and Paz, although this album doesnt have a weak verse on it. Plus all cuts are real strong. There is no filler or bullshit on the record its the total package. I suggest all you youngins cop one and do push ups to it.

Comment: Poet proves once again why he's an underground legend; with a hardcore delivery and a gritty way with words, he's able to keep the listener's attention throughout the entire album. The beats are top shelf, upcoming producer Stubangas, who laces each track with some of the hardest kicks and darkest samples featured on an UG album this year since Heavy Metal Kings. If you get a chance, take in the Blaq Poet Society.

Comment: Let me put my two cents in this. Stu has been paying dues and putting in work for some time now. it's nice that he finally got an oppt. to do something official. if you think about it, it would take a lot of time to find samples that fit a constant theme for an entire album. you either like these types of beats or you don't. i'm sure there's enough of an audience to make this a worthy album. peace Stu, keep doing you and crafting your signature sound...

Comment: The beats on this album are so f*cking worse, almost every song got the same cheap ''sample'', just like Reef's Fight Music. I rly dont understand why Stu Bangas is still that populair. Almost every producer at tis moment is better than him.

Comment: Again Poet brings heat but the production is pretty weak, all beats sound the same - no energy and nothing that sends a chill down your spine just a bit boring really.

Comment: Stu and Vanderslice are veterans at what they do... bring big hardhitting beats! The main reason I'm checking this record is cuz of those two dudes! They got their own sound and it's sick as hell! Can't believe some people are ripping on the production, smh.

Comment: I like the album! But whats up with you having a white producers and saying n*gga on the every song.If The producer called Blaq Poet a n*gga he would want to hurt him.Black brothers keep your game tight.Black producers are falling off.

Comment: Pretty new? Vanderslice already produced back then in 2005 for Access Immortal. Anyway, this album is pretty good and I think it's better than the one that Premo has produced.

Comment: I'm surprised nowone is feeling these mellower beats it's a good contrast with poet's voice. Reminds me of the screwball days. The last album was so hard it was boring and I'm a premo junkie!! Just my opinion. Guess you guys liked the last album.

Comment: I hear what dudes are saying about the sound on this but I consider it good for producers to have a 'sound' or a consistent feel to their beats. I mean you can always pick out a primo beat or a rza joint right? not a bad thing - I think Poet sounds great over this production - plus these guys are pretty new and working with legends already so that should tell you something - I'm sure Brick got most of the features for it but still can't deny it, another solid release from them - 3.75 stars for me - QB still doing it!!!

Comment: I like Blaq Poet and think he has a good album in him but is it me or does this producer use the EXACT same drums on every track. They all sound similar too. If I just hear a 12" release with 2 tracks I wouldnt notice but I dont think I could listen to this whole album straight through in one listen.

Comment: jesus christ... all hese dudes beats sound the same. for one, they think they are the alchemist (you arent). every single beat is either a synth loop or a piano loop. all I know is if I was to put out an album, every beat wouldnt sound the same. this will be a forgettable cd is about 2 weeks after its release date. IF THAT.
