Item Summary

In music, timing is everything.

When soon-to-be-renowned Boston hip-hop duo 7L & Esoteric collaborated with the Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck on the title track to 7LES's debut EP Speaking Real Words in 1999, the timing was perfect. The upstart duo was building a serious buzz on the East Coast and beyond, while Deck was still winning praise for his gold-selling solo disc Uncontrolled Substance. As flashy pop-oriented rap was pumped on commercial radio stations, their natural chemistry and simpatico skills shone as a beacon to real hip-hop fans, a base of listeners who were soon asking about their next musical summit.

14 years later, the hunger for sharp lyrics and head-snapping beats hasn't dissipated. In the face of the ever-worsening status quo of watered-down and vapid radio rap songs, the call for something real has only gotten stronger, and once again the time is right for a call to action � for someone or something to come in and send wack rappers running for the hills in fear. Enter CZARFACE, the upcoming, uncompromising full-length album from Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric.

Not surprising, respect for real hip-hop runs deep, and CZARFACE brings an army with it - consider the star-studded guest list which includes Roc Marciano, Action Bronson, Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks,) Oh No (Gangrene,) Mr. MFN eXquire and Deck's fellow Wu-Tang Clansmen Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna.

Aside from one track blessed by the almighty DJ Premier, production on CZARFACE belongs exclusively to DJ 7L, who provides the musical backbone which holds the album together. His ability to craft a hip-hop sound that's current and exciting with a classic feel left Deck impressed: "This is one of the first albums I've heard in a while that gives you so many different feels. You hear the '80s hip-hop style, '80s R&B and rock combined with what's going on now. That's creating something new, in my opinion."

A collaboration this big is bound to catch some attention, as it has from MISHKA NYC artist Lamour Supreme, who penned the eye-popping Jack "King" Kirby inspired cover art for CZARFACE; just the first surprise within the CD's packaging. The disc is housed in a handsome 6 panel hi gloss wallet that when folded out reveals a 3D 'Pop-Up book' style figure of Supreme's rendering of the soon to be classic 'Hip Hop Anti- Hero.'

Comment: @waxcat, no YOU need a proper system and need to listen to some properly pressed vinyl on it. This pressing is straight trash. And it's not just the vinyl, the CD sounds like shit also. The problem is the mix/mastering of this project. It wasn't done properly and no mater what it's pressed to vinyl, cd, cassette it will sound like shit. "Turn the volume up a notch"? That there tells me you have a cheap system. Probably still using a DJ mixer. I have a table/cart combo that costs almost 3 grand. A dedicated tubed phono preamp. I use nothing but Kimber Kable for all my connections. If a piece of vinyl is pressed correctly it sounds like the artist is right in my room. That is not the case with this pressing.

Comment: Much as I have always been a fan of these guys, this gets a 3 from me. It was just too anticipated for too long and ultimately it was a bit of a letdown. The rhymes are good and it is a good length, but some of the beats are just repetitive and lethargic. About 5-6 of the beats are very very dope but the rest just seem like throwaways. Im afraid 7L has fallen off a bit---ever since he became a full time big DJ in Boston---prob doesn't have as much time to work on beats. Worth buying to support nonetheless. These guys been doing it for years.

Comment: I like every track on this album. A lot of the time collaboration albums fall short of displaying the best of either artist involved but this time they nailed it. Best album by all 3 artists in a long time and probably the best 7L & Eso album ever. I always thought some of INS's best songs were with Eso and vice versa. This album didn't disappoint at all. Definitely one of the best albums of 2013.

Comment: I'd like to give this a higher rating but I cop'd the vinyl of this and it's straight trash sounding. Muddy hollow sound. Sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. Sounds like the vinyl was sourced with 16/44.1 files. Too bad cause the 7L beats from what I can hear sound refreshing vs most of the other shit out right now.

Comment: just listened to the snippets on itunes and I cant wait for this joint...It straight up sounds like it should of dropped in 94 and every song sounded good,as for the dj premier beat,someone commented saying it was garbage but I like the beat from the little bit I listened to and frankly I think its probably 1 of the best beats on the album and he sticks with his signature sound,I would of known it was a premier beat before reading the credits. 4 mics!!!
