A conceptually, intellectually, creatively, and musically superior EP. It's a match made in heaven with him and Stones Throw. This is cutting-edge, Fam. I just cannot wait for a full length the genius Madlib. "Hold Your Head" is my shit. | Name: Lord Kel (Posted: 4/28/2012 2:02:00 AM; Partial IP: 60.156.241) Location: Lorain, Oh Comment: All of the songs here have a spacey, dreamy feel to them, sort of like "The Miracle" on Subject:Matter. "Look Out" even sounds similar to "Drive" by the Cars. In fact, I read in an interview with the man that Chimera is an unattainable dream, the spacey sound is part of the concept of the whole EP. The wordplay here is some of the best I've ever heard in Hip Hop history, particularly on my favorite cut, "Illuminati". This song has the deepest, best wordplay on the EP, accompanied by the most hypnotic music, not to mention a name drop of Flavor Flav and Chuck D. "Hold Your Head" starts off about being depressed over one’s current situation, but features a 3rd verse where BoySand unleashes a We-can-get-through-this peptalk in that speedy MC style that we've become accustom to from his earlier works like "The Carpenter" on The Good Sun. It’s one of the best songs (and videos) he’s ever done. And when was the last time you heard a rapper say "Word to the Mother"? hmmm.
This is easily 5 stars, maybe more. But it’s not for everybody, it might be too deep for some, and it's lacking an upbeat banger. But I'm sure that will show up on his full length album this summer, First of a Living Breed. | Name: Carson (Posted: 3/25/2012 1:16:00 PM; Partial IP: 1.251.3.60) Location: Toronto Comment: I wanna hear that J57 song now! | Name: AJS (Posted: 2/5/2012 2:38:00 PM; Partial IP: 69.170.207) Location: underground Comment: Man April is gonna be a good month!
