When I heard the final product I unfortunatly didnt feel the same way. Pete rock has always been one of my favorite producers but this album dosent give me that warm fuzzy feeling like he usually does. This album does have some nice tracks on it but some other songs feel like he fell asleep at the boards. Smif n wessun have never been my favorites, dah shining is the only LP I felt was worth owning, but I must admit there have been many other bangers on their past albums, just not consistent all the way through for my taste and the same issue plagues this release. I could see how many of you might like this, it has potential, but I have a strict view that for me to consider a good album is an album that I like, feel and enjoy straight through for years to come. It dosent reach that level for me but for all the rest who dig it, keep poppin it! |

Hate to admit my fav producer seems to have gotten lazy on this LP. Too many straight up loops, not really what fans expect from The Creator. Lyrical nice effort from Tek n Steele. Although some of the features just didn't work. And oh yeah, that shit with hurricane g is an embarrassment. Between a 2.5 and 3. |

Name: SP-KINGZ (Posted: 7/4/2011 6:30:00 PM; Partial IP: 8.81.52.55) Location: HatBoro Comment: If i've learned anything from past experiences, it's that most hip-hop albums require a few solid listens before offering up a proper constructive criticism. But here, Pete Rock's production just seems to lack the depth and intensity it had, once up a (SP-1200) time. With mostly, monotonous loops, and droopy drum patterns, the Chocolate Boy Wonder claims to have more versatility on the MPC2500—with its 45+ minutes of sample time. Quite honestly, his sound seems stripped of all layers, with a simple kick-hat-snare and some bass notes and 16-pads worth of chops ala DONUTS. It leaves a lot to be desired... and by all means, I'm for simplicity in hip-hop... nice backdrop for emcees to get busy lyrically on. Still... so much more could've been achieved... moreso, everytime Pete's worked with a Wu-Tang member he feels it necessary to make the RZA-esque soundscape. Don't get that really, considering his best work on Soul Survivor was some of Wu-member's best work to date.
There were a few stand out tracks, but the most annoying and disappointing had to be the cop-out BABE RUTH - THE MEXICAN joint... where he just chop/looped up more than 30 seconds of the original song: PUFF DADDY loops, loops, loops. Nothing exciting there... |

I agree with a few of you dudes below sayin that PR's production really hasn't been anything amazing in the last 5-8 years maybe..Maybe even longer. You listen to the beats on Soul Survivor and then you listen to this, and you're like HUH?? Beats on Soul Survivor were fuckin AMAZING. The beats on NY's Finest were much better than this. But there are a couple bangers on here, "That's Hard" is definitely one,"Top of the world" and "Feel Me." But most of the other tracks are average. BTW, I wouldn't have expected Pete to re-use certain overused samples that have been used by countless producers. Pete, you can do better! |

IMO, but Pete's production is boring on this, which does make the album kind of boring itself. I think if the production was better, we'd have a better vibe from Tek/Steele. I have not really been feeling Pete's production the last few years. It's okay, but just sort of bland. No disrespect to PR/SnW, but this is just not as bimpin as I thought. I will try to listen a bunch more times. The collabos are good, and a couple tracks are nice, but overall Im a bit let down. What happened at the release party though, damn, fuck them NY Piggies!!!! |

This album is a grower. I know many peeps be expecting some Dah Shinin vibe... basically it's still that gritty NY ish, just not as dark (obviously the era and production play a main part) Get that out ya head and the albums will be that much better for it. Production wise, Pete Rock came thru on this one... his beats are supreme, a few styles over the album but always fresh, always real hip hop, always NY!!!! SnW are on point as well... they always work well together and Tek has kinda slowed down his style some what but Steele will always be a lyrical great and he doesn't let up on this one either. Guests... all except Black Rob & Memephis Bleek come thru hard. I wish they got Eternia or Invincible instead of Hurricane G on the "Do It" track, that woulda made the track an instant classic. All in all a great achievement from producer and MC's... dare I say it, it's Smif-N-Wessuns best album since Dah Shinin and Pete Rock continues to elevate his legendary status bystaying true to the hip hop art form and keepin it fresh for 2011!!! |
