| Show Description | | BBC 5 was born out of the midst of struggle. Determined to reconnect with my Brooklyn fam and revive oldschool Hip Hop, I DJ Cyrus moved back to this unchallenged borough of NYC. On the streets, I ran into dudes attempting to push CDs with the same playlists that were originally aired on B-Boy Classics at UGHH.com. We used to call this biting! Even on New York radio (I won't say any names), DJs were attempting to bring back these very cuts that have been ignored by them for years. Was it because the names were included in the BBC playlists? Someone is not giving credit were credit is due. But hey, its not what you play, its how you play it.
This particular show was produced in the heart of the slums. Copies of the prior shows had been burned to CD, which prompted my man Quest Legendz (a street rapper from Bed-Stuy) to drop a promo for BBC 5. That promo is from the heart, no gimmicks.
The first half hour brings back the boom box classics. Especially the mix by Kool DJ Red Alert. I actually wore that one out in 1986, until a friend of mine snatched it out of my ride. It was recorded at a time when Kool DJ Red Alert (98.7 WRKS), KRS One, etc. were bombing with Mr. Magic (107.5 WBLS), Marley Marl, Juice Crew, etc.
The Cold Crush harmony (1981) was originated by the Crash Crew (1977). Refelecting on shows recorded in 1978 when Grandmaster Flash had the Furious 4 (not 5), you can see how rappers hear biting off each other.
Busy Bee vs. Kool Moe Dee brought it all to light. This is a battle that changed the face of rap music and intensified competition between crews.
The hardcore edge on the 2nd half of the show is due to the frustration of brothers getting shot down in our hood for no reason. Its raining, our feet are wet, there is an eviction notice on the door, people who were close to us have passed away, and we are doing everything we can to stay focused.
We are doing this for real Hip Hop fans who can see beyond the mainstream BS. |

P.S. Wasn't Busy Bee vs. Kool Moe Dee recorded in december 1981 (Harlem World) instead of 1982?
