Summary

For their 3rd full-length album titled Owl (Galapagos4, 2010), Qwel & Maker's creative partnership has gone from 'occcasional collaboration' to a full-fledged endeavor and the results are loud, clear, and undeniable.

Once described by Rolling Stone as having "stark, biographical songs that occupy the same bleak terrain as Francis Bacon paintings or The Dark Knight," the Chicagobased duo has matured substantially since the release of their 2009 sophomore LP and continually raise the bar with their brand of raw, unadulterated, underground Hip-Hop.

"The Owl watches and grows wiser," explains Maker. "As we became more aware of our environment, we gained new perspectives. This album is our way of reconnecting with everything that surrounds us."

The duo is most at home on tracks like "El Camino" where Qwel's lyrics scrape vibrant, and often harsh, realities across Maker's soundscape of hard hitting drums and deft arrangements. "Name looking strange in the limelight / Chamber what you trying to change / Sitting here soaking in hindsight / It's the road / Its the life I chose" concludes Qwel on "El Camino."

Newly commited to the 'life they chose' and resolved to defeat stagnation in an industry in transition, Qwel & Maker have only just begun...

Comment: i'm thinkin' this is QWEL's best album since The Harvest, and it's probably his tightest album for start-to-end listening. seamless. all three albums with Maker are his three greatest solo joints, they're the perfect combo. I could recommend this album to any hip hopper without a doubt, the only way someone couldnt feel this would be if they're deaf, or reptillian. with such a storied (though unfortunately unde the radar of most) career, Qwel & the G4 famalam continue to prove their supreme committment to quality music, no bullshit, no selling out, no contrived collabs to take the easy way out, just pure, true music that will forever stay real, timeless. support these artists and stop being distracted by all the fake hyped up blog bullshit out there. this is REAL music. infinite consciousness embodied in hip hop

Comment: good solid album. Not as good as "So Be It" which had more hype beats on it, but this is a Qwel album and he is one of the best MC's out there. I give this 4.5 stars by the way. only got to skit 2 tracks 7 and 8 all the rest are dope. but not as good as "So Be It" not even close.

Comment: The knock on Qwel earlier in is career was that he was very hit and miss. Pushing out too many albums and his great skills were always recognizable but often buried in lackluster projects and forgettable ideas. Well Qwel is finally living up to his full potential in teaming up with Maker these last couple releases. Silvery, soulful, poignant, and skillful, the production is handled deftly by Maker drawing you in from the opening track. Allowing the listener to settle in and let Qwel spin a few tales and pick his mind over some luscious backdrops. Right up there with "So Be It" from last year. High class Hip-Hop on this release.

Comment: Qwel is making it difficult to leave his name out of any top 10 emcees/rappers out today and Makers beats as simply soulfully hip hop as they are, they thump with the jazzy boom bapstics of early Digable Planets, this is an incredible recording/release, all that is missing from this duo is an in studio DJ adding cuts to every track
