With his debut on Little Brother's album, The Listening, selling over 30,000 units independently, Big Pooh serves a solid fan base 14 blazing tracks on his debut solo release Sleepers. The album, which is being released by Kansas City Royals' second basemen Desi Relaford's 6 Hole Records, features Little Brother's Phonte along with O-Dash, Spectac, Darien Brockington, Joe Scudda, Median and Murs. Adding to the mayhem is production by the highly demanded 9th Wonder who has recently produced tracks for major players Jay-Z, Nas, Memphis Bleek, Masta Ace, Murs, and Jean Grae to name just a few. Additional production comes from Khrysis of The Away Team, Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange duo, and Dho. In addition to the work he has done with Little Brother, Pooh has been making waves in the industry lately with appearances on both the Ladykillers soundtrack and Pete Rock's Soul Survivors II.

Comment: I was first introduced to Little Brother with "The Minstral Show" -"Lovin' It". That joint was hot, and to my delight, so was the album. And so was the "CHITLIN' CIRCUIT 1.5". And "THE LISTENING". Basically I heard 1 track and bought 3 albums. Where has Little Brother been??? Where has Rapper Big Pooh been??? Big Pooh is heard on all of their albums and for the most part he sounds like a nice compliment to Phonte most of the time, although he he does have his moments that suggest he could shine brighter with some more focus and effort. With that being said, after listening to "SLEEPERS", Rapper Big Pooh doesn't "NEED" to accompany anyone on a track. Pooh holds his own, and then some. His flow has the same familiar cadence. But it's like he's on RAP STEROIDS. "I Don't Care" is a perfect opening track, he basically says what some cats have been thinking, blatantly or indirectly, and says he doesn't need anyones approval to rock the mic like it or not he raps cause he loves and respects the art form. Once you realize that this album is even more enjoyable because there is so much good content flows/beats. Just take Rapper Big Poohs lead and ride to it.

Stand out tracks in my opinion are:

"Strongest Man" - Worthy flow by Pooh & classic 9th production.
"Heart of the City" - His skills are apparent with the images he paints as you listen. Worthy production.

"Every Block" - Takes you through his writing process, truthful and also familiar to anyone who writes. Classic.

"Just Friends" - It's like "Big Poppa - Players Anthem" re-worked minus the Cristal. It works and the ladies like it as well. nice.

"On My Mind" - One of the deeper tracks I've heard in a while. Poohs' ability to set the table with emotion and imagery make this track something special. With production that is elegant. DOPE. Wish it were longer.

"Scars" - Showcases some clever wordplay on Poohs behalf. Pooh out shines the second rapper. Scudda brings the track back though. Classic 9th.

"Between The Lines" - Just might be the crown jewel on this CD. Above par skills on the mic and on the boards. Wanted one more verse. Short but sweet. DOPE.

"Now ft.MURS" - Big fan of MURS. Pooh once again proves that the game is in good hands. Sets it up for MURS to put his 2 cents in. But this is definitely Poohs CD. Nice production. WHAT UP KHRYSIS?!!!

"The Fever" - Pooh puts his own spin on a concept/theme that any M.C. worth his spit has tried to tackle. Pooh effortlessly shines and proves that a good hook oh so important. Good Production.

If you had any doubts about Rapper Big Poohs ability/skills and you're a fan of REAL HIP-HOP you owe it to yourself to listen to "SLEEPERS". Satisfying. Well concieved and thought through. Poohs probably nicer than over 90% of rappers out there. Take your time and enjoy....SUPPORT REAL HIP-HOP. SEE A CONCERT. BUY AN ALBUM AT LEAST. THIS IS AS REAL AS IT GETS. Be eazy!

Comment: I was a skeptic about "The Listening", but it was dope, I was a skeptic about "Foreign Exchange", but it was dope, I also was a skeptic to see if Pooh could carry his own album, but I am now a believer. This album as the previous by the crew exemplifies what hip hop is missing, tight production, true emceeing and love. Go get this right now, trust me!

Comment: I've heard very mixed reviews about this album. Maybe expectations have run too high I don't know, but I had to check it out for myself. I found "Sleepers" to be very solid. 9th Wonder delivers the signature sound, and Big Pooh has a certain confidence on the mic that is likeable. Of course the album has a few songs that fizzle out, particularly those cuts with guest appearances. But those are small potatoes compared to the overall sound. Definitely a good album. Standouts include, "Heart Of The City", Every Block" feat. Phonte, "Between The Lines', and "Just Friends". Recommended.
