Summary

Sole's first solo album in seven years is about resistance, power, global revolution and philosophy. The title is lifted from a Marx letter by the same name.

This avant-garde hip-hop album takes the rap-as-critical-theory aesthetic that Sole has developed over the past few years on the Nuclear Winter mixtapes to a more concrete and original musical format. Following up on the critical success of Hello Cruel World, A Ruthless Criticism is the next logical step in this development of rap music; it is challenging and sometimes poppy while still pushing things in a more experimental, belligerent and militant direction.

Like Sole's previous solo albums, A Ruthless Criticism of Everything Existing has a multitude of collaborations with various producers, and features Busdriver, Alias, Open Mike Eagle, Ryan Hemsworth, Ausker, Factor, Man Mantis and others.

Comment: Spectacular album with abundant relevancy. Yeah, sometimes he raps without rhyming, sometimes he raps with rhyming and sometimes closer to spoken word but always dope and well-crafted. Diverse beats that knock while not sounding vanilla. Favorite LP of year along with Flashbang Grenada. Get a clue.

Comment: It's good, but it's hard to call this rap. He rarely rhymes....ever. It's more like spoken word poetry over hip-hop beats. But I do like it and he gets a lot of respect for originality and staying true to the sound he wants to put out.

Comment: i am absolutely flabbergasted with how incredible this album is - to me Sole is one of the greatest to ever touch the mic with lyrical integrity mostly unseen since the PE days, but I was for some reason expecting this to be less of an official album, more like Desert Eagle or something... but this is a perfect album w/ no filler, incredible beats and some of Sole's greatest, hardest hitting political and social commentary. I fully agree w/ Spikey's comment - as israel slays innocent palestinian kids with their bombing campaigns in gaza and the nwo gears up for an unjust war w/ iran we need real talk and action, like what is contained on this banger.

Comment: So excited to hear his new classic album. Ready to elevate my ears from his powerful knowledge. This year, 2012 need Sole. The time we're in couldn't be anymore crucial.
