Summary

Representative of how the Internet can aid in creating music, The Foreign Exchange started when Little Brother rapper Phonte heard a beat on /Okayplayer.com by Dutch producer Nicolay and asked if he could lay some vocals over it. Nicolay agreed, and the song "Light It Up" appeared shortly after as the B-side to "Whatever You Say" off Little Brother's 2003 album, The Listening. Relying mainly on Instant Messenger and email, the duo continued to work together, with Nicolay sending beats to Phonte, who would add vocals and send them back until they had enough tracks together to form an album. Not once during the entire process of making their debut, Connected, which came out in 2004, did the members of the Foreign Exchange speak over the phone or in person.

Seven years after its release (and 2+ years out of print), The Foreign Exchange Music are happy to announce the re-pressing of the debut album "Connected." Featuring guest turns from Rapper Big Pooh, Von Pea (of Tanya Morgan), and longtime +FE collaborators Darien Brockington and YahZarah, "Connnected" was originally released on BBE in 2004. The album has been officially out of print since 2009 and original pressings currently sell for upwards of $50 on Amazon and eBay. The new +FE Music reissue contains the original "Connected" album, as well as all the accompanying remixes and instrumentals packaged in a specially priced double-disc digipak complete with all the original artwork.

Comment: A VERY IMPORTANT ALBUM IN HIP HOP. THIS ALBUM BROKE ALOT OF BARRIERS. THE PRODUCTION IN THE ALBUM IS A MUSICAL LANDSCAPE. THE ALBUM COVER, AND BOOKLET IMAGES SPEAK FOR ITSELF. WHEN U LISTEN TO THE ALBUM CAREFULLY. LOOK AT THE ALBUM COVER, AND INSIDE OF IT. THEN YOU WILL SEE THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE ALBUM. SOLID ALBUM.

Comment: Overall, “Connected” is very solid. You have up and coming producer Nicolay showcasing his versatility as a Hip Hop producer, constructing beats by layering synths, strings, and electric keys, over thick bass lines and tight drum programming. At times leading the listener into progressive changes that explore underlying electronica and R&B themes. Then you have the strong vocal stylings of Phonte from Little Brother, who typically outshines his cohort, Joe Scudda with the rhyme device. For that reason I felt like this album could have been so much better if it were just Phonte and Nicolay. But it is what it is. Worth checking out though.
