    Summary

During the 1990s, the line between jazz and hip-hop had crossed numerous times, leaving the perfect opening for the legendary Philadelphia upstarts The Roots to release their self-produced debut, Organix. The album generated significant enough industry buzz that they were signed to a major-label soon after.

Long before one of the greatest live hip-hop groups of all-time was entertaining audiences of thousands on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Organix was the band at its' loosest and most playful, and a pinnacle in the development of the group, which would culminate with their landmark release "Do You Want More?!?." An important part of any fan of The Roots, or funk-inflected rap music in general, featuring the smooth basslines of Leonard Hubbard, the sinuous organ-work of an early Scott Storch, and the jazzy beats and esoteric rhymes of the band's longest-serving members, ?uestlove and Black Thought.

Comment: i gotta be honest, the first time I heard of The roots was their second album 'Do You want More?!!!??!' when it first dropped I thought it was their first, but when I found out about "Organix" I took it more seriously, this didnt mean I slept on them but became more intrigued that it didnt show on my radar. Maybe its because they released 'Organix' Independently and it probably didnt reach the west coast as far as the distribution took it. There were two videos shot for this album 'Pass The Popcorn' and 'The Anti-Circle' directed by Abdul Stone Jackson. you could peep it out on youtube. were it shows some credits it lists them as formerly The Square Roots. alot of fans fail to recognize the first album because they werent signed to a major label, but this album was highly slept on and this doesnt mean that the label made the group but they were once underdogs of the industry.
