    Summary

Us3's Platinum 'Hand On The Torch' remastered and expanded for 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition.

Los Angeles, California - April 8, 2013: This year marks the 20th anniversary of Us3's acclaimed, platinum-certified 1993 album, Hand On The Torch and its gold-certified single, 'Cantaloop' for a new 2-CD 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition on Blue Note/ UMe.

Formed in 1992, Us3 is the brainchild of London-based producer Geoff Wilkinson. Alongside former production partner Mel Simpson, the duo created a worldwide sensation with their 1993 debut release. Hand On The Torch became Blue Note Records' first ever platinum-certified album in the U.S., and the single "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" featuring a sample of Herbie Hancock's 1964 song "Cantaloupe Island" reached Billboard Hot 100's Top 10.

The worldwide success of Us3 took everyone by surprise and proved a point to Wilkinson. "I always thought there was a huge potential audience for jazz amongst younger people, and I wanted Us3 to be a point of access for them. By sampling classic jazz tracks, mixing them with beats and raps, and having younger jazz cats playing on top I was acknowledging the past, staying rooted in the present, and looking forward to the future, all at the same time."

Comment: Please disregard the last post that I made. I really don't know wtf I'm talking about. I was wrong. This is a great album! One of the first and best integrations of hip hop with jazz samples. Old skool jazz is still great, I can like Donald Byrd and still appreciate that in the early '90s the kids were trying something new.

Comment: i bought this in 93 when it released and was so unimpressed. it is the epitome of jazz-hop disappointment and one of the reasons why everyone stopped making this shit back then. when everyone was busy riding the high of "a new refutation of time and space" and "low end theory", this p.o.s. fell out of the sky. it's no wonder they exiled themselves to europe and made like 12 more albums to the euro kids who'll really listen to anything. what? ... scathing I know. sorry. it's the truth though. peace. what's more is that I can't even listen to donald byrd's "cantaloupe island" anymore and not think of this crappy album. you ruined a legendary jazz song for me. thanks, that's great. fuck. yeah I did just say donald byrd. you know why? because as a kid I heard this version first and it drove me so far away from the original version (i realize it's herbie hancock) that i'm trying to forget it exists now. what's more is that I can't even listen to donald byrd's "cantaloupe island" anymore and not think of this crappy album. you ruined a legendary jazz song for me. thanks, that's great.
