Making an album is an artform iteself, it should flow from track to track to get over a topic or group of topics. mixtapes are for random shit, albums are a milestone in an artists career.

But in general, if you are lucky enough to hear the pre-release of an artist's album, then you get the chance to appreciate the polished version that much more.
